CHARACTER
Character Name: Matthew Murdock
Character Age: Early 30s
Canon: Daredevil (MCU)
Canon Point: Post Season 2, right around when Defenders would begin
History: Wiki entry

Personality:
Matt Murdock is very much a man in two parts, embattled within himself as much as he is against criminals in his city.

From the moment Matt is introduced, he is living two lives -- the first as straight-and-narrow lawyer, trying to fight the good fight, to represent the good causes. He has turned down a lucrative job offer at a large law firm in favor of opening his own law office with his best friend and fellow attorney, Foggy Nelson. Matt and Foggy want to help people, want to represent people that need representation, and to not be beholden to high price morally questionable clientele. Matt means well; Matt always means well, but sometimes doing the right thing and following the exact letter of the law.

It's an odd contradiction. Matt has a lot of faith in the law that he has studied, that he works within as an attorney, in that system. However, he also believes that the law itself has its limitations, and that certain terrible acts, criminals, and people can manage to operate in spite of it, just beyond the law's reach. And that's where the Devil of Hell's Kitchen comes in.

Matt believes whole-heartedly that his vigilante acts are done in order to help people, to help those who can't protect themselves, to help the city that he grew up in, that he loves so much. However, Matt comes very close to a line. He is violent and often downright vicious in his treatment of the criminals as the masked vigilante, laying severe beatings on those he catches -- in order to stop them, or gain information from them. He doesn't kill, not intentionally anyway, though he seems to be comfortable with throwing a man off a roof and into a dumpster (and into a coma). There is a lot of anger in Matt Murdock, when his city or the people he cares about are threatened or hurt -- he especially reacts this way when Claire is hurt, because of her connection to him.

But this contradiction, of being within the law and without the law, of approaching that line between violence and actual killing, it torments Matt. He has a lot of guilt. He confides in a priest at a church, tries to take guidance and solace in his faith. He admits that he is somewhat afraid of the path that he's walking. He thinks he may need to kill a man in order to stop him, but then the question becomes -- is he doing the things he does because he needs to, or because he wants to? He eventually manages to decide on not resorting to killing (though only after making an attempt, which fails, and which he feels an odd sense of relief in that failure). He is called the Devil of Hell's kitchen, and sometimes he fears that is truly what he is becoming.

This is a question that doesn't go away. Later when he encounters Frank Castle, his belief in not killing the criminals he tries to stop comes straight against Frank's belief in, well, basically the exact opposite. Somehow Matt can understand Frank's stance, but he can't adopt it himself. Even when given a forced choice of killing a criminal, or killing Frank in order to stop Frank from killing the criminal, Matt chooses another option. He has his metaphoric line in the sand, and he doesn't want to cross it, even if he is often associated with people who think quite differently than he does -- from Frank Castle, to Elektra, to even Karen.

Matt has an odd amount of guilt about being Daredevil, in part because of his commitment to the law, in part because of his faith, in part because of the danger it puts those close to him in, and in part because of his father. Before his father died, Matt's dad wanted Matt to make his way in the world using his brain, and not his fists. His father was a boxer, and always wanted better for his son. While Matt idolized his father in many ways, he wanted to make him proud, threw himself into his studies. Even after his father died, he tries to do as his father would want, doing well in school, graduating summa cum laude from law school. But he also takes up the mantle of vigilante.

Matt's relationships with those he cares about most, are put to the test by the conflict and contradiction in him. In many ways, keeping the secret that he has kept tore his friendship (and professional partnership) with Foggy Nelson apart. It's strained his relationship with Karen Page. Even Claire who met him first as the Devil rather than as Matt, though she remains a friend and ally, she recognizes that anything more than that with him isn't something that can happen.

And honestly, Matt is used to being alone. In his adult life, he often keeps people at that sort of arm's length, in many ways to protect them. But more than that, Matt is used to the people he cares about leaving him. His father is killed when Matt is only a child. He spends most of his childhood in an orphanage; his mother is not in the picture. Stick, his mentor, comes and helps him to understand and control his abilities, and teaches him to fight, refines his skills -- and then leaves him as soon as Matt starts to grow attached to him. His tumultuous relationship with Elektra ends because they live two different lives, have very different ideas of how to approach things in terms of violence and killing. When she comes back into his life, it's continued turmoil. He cares for her, but they're still on different paths. And when they finally decide that they'll figure out a way to walk that path together, Elektra dies shortly thereafter. Matt knows loss, intimately, maybe more intimately than he knows anyone.

In his day to day interactions, Matt comes across as friendly enough and cheerful. He's self deprecating and quick with jokes. He's quick to flirt and is possessed of a charm that is something often bemoaned by Foggy. His friendship with Foggy seems to be, especially in their younger days, where he is most at ease. The two act like the young law students they are, partners in crime. Matt is a serious student, but not entirely immune to being dragged out for a good time. But he does have a very serious streak, one that manifests as a stubbornness, sometimes hypocritical, scolding people for taking risks that he himself takes all the time. In fact, Matt often pushes himself beyond what he should physically be able to do, re-opening recent wounds, nearly getting himself killed. None of that stops him.

He also has a fairly low bar for bullshit, and he doesn't back down, giving as good as he gets. This is particularly apparent with his relationship with Stick, the exasperation with the old man's motives. It's also clear in his banter with Jessica Jones (though this occurs shortly beyond his canon point) he's quick to give snark back for snark, but to also find amusement in the banter.

In his day to day life, Matt is very careful to disguise the fact that his senses are as acute as they are, that although he is blind, he can perceive often better than the sighted people around him. It's an act of sorts, to protect his identity in many ways, but also because few people would understand what it is he could do, and it would open up a lot of questions. He does tell Foggy when they first meet that he appreciates the other man not treating him like he's delicate or made of glass just because he happens to be blind.

At his current point in canon, Matt is trying to give up being Daredevil, is trying to leave that behind him. But it isn't easy, it isn't something that he can walk away from. But he's tired of putting friends and loved ones in harm's way, and is trying. It's a struggle.

In general, Matt Murdock always means well. He can be a hypocrite. He deals with a great deal of guilt and conflict over who he is, in both his lives. He's incapable of standing down when he believes he can help. He gets himself into just as much trouble as he gets himself out of. Usually. He takes risks, sometimes acting like he's ready to be a martyr for whatever cause he is fighting for. He's often at odds with himself about what is the right thing to do. But god he tries. He always tries

Inventory:
Clothes on his back, briefcase and contents (if possible his laptop with its Braille translator), cane, dark glasses, cellphone

Abilities:
Matt Murdock lost his sight as a young boy. However, his other senses are so acute that they have more than compensated for this. He says he can "see" in a way, but that he sees a "world on fire" -- a sort of picture put together by his other senses. His hearing is very strong; he can hear conversations buildings away. He can hear heartbeats and breathing. He can smell and feel things beyond what most human beings can even imagine, down to being able to sense temperature variations and vibrations, to tell what someone had for lunch, what shampoo they use. He can tell if someone is lying by their physiological reactions alone.

Beyond these senses, Matt is an incredibly effective fighter. He's good at taking a beating (something he inherited from his father) and doling it out. Stick, who trained him, calls him the most naturally gifted fighter that he's ever seen. The man is also something of an acrobat, springing parkour-style between buildings, over fences, over rooftops.

Matt is also a talented lawyer (summa cum laude from Columbia is impressive). He's also pretty fluent in Spanish.

Flaws:
Wow does Matt have flaws. The violence and anger in him that he tries to control. The conflict he always feels between being Matt Murdock and being Daredevil. He has hurt people (severely and often), he's tried to kill people, he's killed people he didn't mean to kill (though sometimes they don't stay dead anyway). He's lied to the people that he's closest to. He's a vigilante who relies on his fists rather than on the letter of the law -- which he professes to trust. He tries to do the right thing, but he often goes about it in a rather dark way.
